ICDL (International Children's Digital Library) (http://en.childrenslibrary.org/) is a site that offers children's books from all over the world in various languages that have been scanned and can be looked at and read online.  The books can be searched by age, awards, length, language, genre or cover color among other ways. The books can be read by clicking to move through the pages. If the print is too small to read, just click the text, and it enlarges. The site also offers information about the books including author, publisher, publishing date and occasionally other information.

“La Dolce Vita: Italian Design from the 1920s to the 50s”

 

Marianne Lamonaca, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs and Education, The Wolfsonian–Florida International University

 

In the twentieth century, Italian artists and designers struggled to reconcile native traditions with modernity. Indeed, so much of Italy 's "modern" identity is based on its reinterpretation of the past. This lecture will illustrate the socio-economic, political and cultural rationale for modern design reform in Italy beginning with the establishment of the Monza Biennale in 1923 and culminating with the genesis of Italy ’s post war economic and design boom. Among the topics to be discussed are the contributions of Novecento architects, such as Gio Ponti, and Rationalist architects such as the members of Gruppo 7; the importance of the Milan Triennale as a forum for a critique of contemporary developments in architecture design; and the promotion of Italian design after the war through “Made in Italy.”

 

This lecture takes place in the Brown Auditorium, LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Blvd , Los Angeles , CA 90036 .

Distinguished research professor and President Emeritus of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Renato Dulbecco has made fundamental contributions to understanding the uncontrolled growth of cells that occurs in cancer. His most important discovery was the demonstration that the DNA of the virus is incorporated in the genetic material of the cell, causing a permanent alteration. In 1975 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine (together with David Baltimore and Howard Temin) for research on the interaction of tumor viruses and cellular genetic material. In 1986 he launched the idea of studying all human genes, starting the worldwide Human Genome Project.
