Giuseppe Garibaldi — the hero of two worlds and the leading figure of Italian Risorgimento, celebrated this year all over the world in the Bicentenary of his Birth (Nice, July 4, 1807) — is featured by Prof. Trojani in a very interesting lecture-debate. A book published for the occasion is also presented. The first part of the lecture, “Garibaldi and the Italian pioneers in the American West, the secret societies and the Expedition of the Thousands,” focuses on how Californian gold played a main role in the Expedition of the Thousands and how Italy and the States, the American West in particular, shared the same values in their individual struggles for independence. In the latter part of the lecture, “The Italians in the American Civil War, Garibaldi and Bourbon soldiers in Gettysburg Battle,” the Gettysburg Battle actually turns out to be an Italian Risorgimento conflict fought on American soil.
Alessandro Trojani teaches in the Departments of Education Studies, Political Sciences, and Architecture at the University of Florence and is currently supervising the multimedia project Italians in the Gold Rush and Beyond. He has set out on several journeys in the American Far West tracing the numerous pioneers of Italian origin, establishing their presence there from the second half of the 19th century till now.
Prof. Trojani will be introduced by Joseph Roy Ventress, founder of the IHCF of Los Angeles.
